Grenco Science has pretty much become a household name within the realm of portable dry herb and wax vapes. As prolific as they are, the price point is also fairly good. They have made it very accessible to the budget vaper. Their solution to this problem comes in the form of the G Pen Nova, a portable and easy to use vape pen that compatible with both dry herbs and wax concentrates. But does the lower price of the G Pen Nova mean a significant drop in performance and vapor quality? Let’s find out.
While the G Pen Nova doesn’t really offer much in terms of features especially when compared to the majority of more powerful and complex devices available in the market these days, as a vape pen, it does manage to stand out well enough. The ceramic quartz bowl which your wax or dry herb is loaded into can hold a decent amount of material, not to mention yields pretty satisfying and full flavored hits when used properly
Despite the integrated 300mAh battery which most users might consider to be small or lacking by today’s standards, the G Pen Nova manages to keep up with its competition thanks to its efficient heat output, giving you, the user, pretty lengthy and consistent vape sessions especially on the go when it matters most. The small battery capacity also means that the device charges up almost instantly, under an hour in most scenarios which is pretty darn convenient for a device that’s meant to be taken on the go.
What most avid vapers might find to be missing with the G Pen Nova is the lack of any sort of temperature control which has almost become a standard with vaporizers today. In contrast, the G Pen Nova looks like its trying to keep everything simple which can be advantageous for first-time vapers. Vapers who are used to experimenting or fiddling with a whole gamut of temperature settings and presets will definitely find the G Pen Nova sorely lacking in this regard
Like most devices designed by Grenco Science, the G Pen Nova manages to impress us with its above average build quality. While the Nova isn’t exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to overall build quality and design, actually gripping the device in hand instills a feeling of confidence that most of the budget-priced competition fails to manage. Lastly, we never really experienced any niggling issues or inconsistencies throughout the entire period where we were testing the device.
While the G Pen Nova definitely doesn’t get any awards for innovative design, that doesn’t mean we’re not partial to the practical and straightforward approach towards the aesthetics of the device. The stealthy matte black finish is a great touch especially for those looking for something a bit more low-profile or discreet to vape on. The minimal branding is also well appreciated with a nondescript logo located towards the bottom of the G Pen Nova.
Due to size and price constraints, you’re not going to find a dedicated display on the G Pen Nova, instead what you get is a simple (yet practical) RGB LED indicator highlighting the singular power button which activates the device. Like most vape pens, the LED ring changes color to when the battery is fully charged, or close to depletion and in need of recharging.
It’s in this regard however where the G Pen Nova manages to stand out. The simple sleek and black aesthetic manages to capture the essence of the device in the sense that it’s a pretty easy to use vape that even the most neophyte of vapers should have little to no problem figuring out on their first try. The singular firing button is evidence of that in the sense that there’s not much else to fiddle around or to get confused with when using the G Pen Nova.
The G Pen Nova feels well built enough, but there are a few missteps in the construction of the device that makes itself pretty obvious when handling the G Pen Nova on a daily basis. For starters, the mouthpiece while comfortable does have the annoying tendency to slip off unintentionally. Another issue is how the chamber doesn’t do an efficient job of vaporing the entire contents in one sitting. Heat distribution is lacking and apparent result is that a lot of reclaim or slightly vaped concentrate is leftover in the chamber after each vaping session. Thankfully, the G Pen Nova is easy to disassemble and clean, which should help alleviate this problem.
A surprisingly strong point of the G Pen Nova is its overall vapor and flavor quality when set up properly. Despite the relatively weak output, the device does a respectable job of providing satisfying and consistent hits when needed, at least as far as vaping with wax concentrates was concerned. Our experience with the device and vaping dry herb was average at most as the chamber doesn’t do a spectacular job of distributing heat throughout the chamber to evenly heat up all the herb.
One of the most welcome surprises that comes with the G Pen Nova is the inclusion of a genuine quartz bowl partnered with a ceramic heating element at the bottom. Despite the G Pen Nova being a budget device, it somehow manages to outclass its pricier brothers in this department. While the flavor and vapor production of the G Pen Nova doesn’t necessarily outclass that of its competition from other brands, it does manage to outdo the performance of most of its predecessors manufactured by Grenco themselves.
The atomizer found used by the G Pen Nova accommodates both dry herb and wax concentrates although in our experience using the device with the former tends to produce an unsatisfactory and inconsistent vaping experience. By the end of each session, we often discovered that the dry herb inside the chamber wasn’t even evenly vaporized even when we tried our best to pack the bowl properly to allow proper distribution of air and heat throughout the chamber. Vaping with wax concentrates, however, produced much better results as we found that the limited chamber size played a bit better with the more viscous concentrates we had on hand.
One aspect we weren’t that pleased with however is Grenco’s decision to integrate a horrifyingly weak battery into the G Pen Nova. Powered by a mere 300mAh battery, the G Pen Nova can be a bit of a pain to use for longer sessions when away from a charging port for an extended period of time. With this in mind, it’s hard to recommend the G Pen Nova for anything else besides occasional personal use.
How To Use the G Pen Nova
Despite it’s budget origins we appreciated the fact that the G Pen Nova took the time to include a loading tool incorporated to the bottom of the mouthpiece which made things a bit more convenient when reloading the chamber on the fly Aside from serving as a loading tool, it can also used to dab wax concentrates or stir up the dry herb to help any potential hot spots in your chamber.
Setting up the device took close to no time at all. Simply charge the battery up with the included micro USB cable hooked up to any powered USB source and the LED indicator will let you know once the device is fully charged by shining a bright green. The G Pen Nova is easily powered on by a quick five clicks on the power button after which you can toggle between the 3 temperature presets (Blue=Low, Green=Medium, Red=High). After deciding on which temperature preset you’d like to vape on, press the power button twice to initiate the heat up process.
When activated this way, the G Pen Nova will heat up for 15 seconds before shutting off. Alternatively, the device can be used in manual mode by simply holding the power button to initiate heat up. When done vaping, just press the power button another five times to shut it off for safe storage.
1) Via the onboard micro USB port, charge the G Pen Nova with the included charging cable by hooking it up to any powered USB port. An LED indicator located at the bottom will flash red to indicate that the device is in the process of charging.
2) When the LED indicator shines green, this means that the G Pen Nova is now fully charged and ready for use. Give the mouthpiece on the top of the device a good pull to reveal the ceramic loading chamber underneath and use the loading tool integrated into the mouthpiece to easily load the chamber with your choice of concentrates or dry herb.
3) Power on the device with a quick five clicks on the power button.
4) Regulate vaping output by switching between the 3 available presets. Press the power button 3 times to cycle between presets using the LED color indicator to determine your preferred output. (Blue: 3.2V / Green: 3.5V / Red: 3.9 V)
5) Once you’ve determined your preferred voltage output, press and hold the power button to vape at your selected output for a max duration of 15 seconds.
6) Alternatively, pressing the power button twice overrides your preset selection and will instead automatically heat up the device to its maximum setting for a duration of 15 seconds ( for a relatively hands-free session)
7) When done, turn the G Pen Nova off by pressing the power button 5 times, effectively shutting it off for safekeeping or storage.
