Up until the mid-2000s, people did not think twice to quit smoking. Most people knew it wasn’t good for you but they just kept smoking. It didn’t help that some people are attracted to smoking and think “it makes you look cool.” Since then electronic cigarettes have come out which took the market by storm. Almost everyone who has smoked a cigarette has tried an e-cig, whether they preferred it or not. Since then, vaporizers have only gotten more powerful to please the vaper. That’s when modded units came out and you started seeing vapers vapor getting bigger and bigger.
What are Vape Mods?
A mechanical mod is a powerful regulated or unregulated vaporizer that connects your battery to your atomizer. It sends the electrical power once you click a button. A variable voltage vape can be a mod also but they have more than one button. They consist of the ability to change your voltage and often times your wattage. The main differences between the two are that mech mods contain no circuitry or circuit boards. They can both use regular 510 thread connection atomizer or use modded atomizers. The reason there are circuit boards is too make sure it limits your use from getting it too hot or frying the unit. Not all resistance levels will work with a VV.
Who Should Use Mods?
A mod vape is mostly used by an advanced vaper who has been through a few vape pens. Starting with a starter kit electronic cigarette is the best way to go. Get used to it and switch to a variable voltage device and get used to it. To be able to change the temperature that means you will need to know a few things like what voltage to use which types of liquids and with which atomizers. You can mod your atomizer with different cotton and different coils.
If you want the safety and peace of mind knowing your battery comes with a circuit board then go the route of a variable voltage. You won’t have to worry about overheating or changing batteries most of the time. A lot of variable voltages (VV) come with rechargeable batteries inside the unit without the ability to take it out.
Benefits of a Mech Mod
A mod has its up and down but it has more benefits to each other. First and foremost, they are hands down more reliable because there is no circuitry to worryabout. They are also easy to fix. There isn’t a bunch of wires inside where you don’t know where each one is connected too. If one rips apart, you need to solder it back or get a new one.
If you want to be able to use it with a rebuildable atomizer or with a dripper, you’re better off with a mod vape. Not only is it more powerful which together will give you a bigger plume of vapor but it makes it so much easier to use it when you’re dripping e-liquid. Bigger clouds are another benefit to using a mech mod. Many people enter into vaping competitions and their main weapon in their arsenal is a mech mod. Usually a bigger battery can be associated with bigger vapor too.
What’s The Difference?
At this point you’re probably wondering what the difference is between a regular e-cig and a mod. It’s not an easy answer but there are key things distinguishing them.
An e-cigarette can come in many different shapes and sizes but they’re all portable. Usually they are thin and skinny but they can also be big and bulky and just enough to hold with one hand. They can change voltage but if they don’t, they are constant at 3.2V-3.3V. They are usually 510 threaded, which is the typing of threading that screw the different components together. Components are usually battery, atomizer and mouthpiece.
Vaporizer pens are the general term for all vaporizers that are shaped thing and slim like a pen. These units are the most discreet and stealthy. They can be used to vaporizer vape juice, dry herbs, or even concentrates depending on the atomizer. Most electronic cigarettes fall under the vape pen category.
Unlike the rest, a vape mod does not have a circuitry to regulate. This means you need to be more careful while vaping a mod. It’s not the vape you begin with. When you get used to e-cigs, you can then switch. Most people make the switch to be able to blow bigger clouds of vapor. Others just need a bigger hit when they vape. It’s also more manual than just refilling your clearomizer. Most vape mods come with the ability to change your coils or update your wick. This adds to the fun aspect.
What to look for in a Mod?
When you are in the market for something powerful, high-quality copper or brass are going to be your best bet. They tend to be better conductors than stainless steel. For high power vaping, aluminum bronze is better than standard bronze and C101 copper is better than standard copper.
The way the vape pen or box mod looks is completely up to you since it will ultimately be your taste. Keep in mind about different things like portability and stealth vaping.
The most important feature to look for in anything with battery or energy flowing through it is safety. You want to make sure you have enough ventilation going through the battery section. Since it is not a regulated vape, it can overheat where a regulated unit will stop it from getting to that level. It is also not recommended to keep them in your pocket with the battery inside.
Types of Atomizers
Many different atomizers and set-ups are available to customize your unit. The atomizer is going to be where you pour your e-juice in. The vapor quality can dramatically change based on your build but you will get used to it fairly quickly.
Rebuildable Atomizer (RBA)
These are simply the generic form atomizers that can be built to your custom liking. You simply build it on the deck with your specific wires and wick then place a tank over it to fill it with e-liquid. When you start vaping, you will realize you built your own clearomizer. These are often called Rebuildable Tank Atomizer (RTA).
Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer (RDA)
An RBA is all done on the deck which contains your build the electrical connection to the battery that heats the coils. You build your coil and wick/cotton set up on the deck and instead of using a tank to fill the e-liquid, it is simply dripped right on top of the cotton. When you want to start vaping, put the drip tip or cap on top. It is the most used between advanced vapers due to its raw and high-quality vapor. It is most widely used in cloud chasing vapor competitions. Resistance on rebuildable dripping atomizers is very low at 0.05 – 0.2 ohms.
How to Use a Vape Pen Mod
If you have ever used a vape pen, you are half way there on using a modded vape. Make sure your batteries are charged and ready to go. Slide it in the tube and close the other end to stop it from falling out. Choose your favorite atomizer that is ready to go. If it is not ready, fix your set up. Screw the atomizer onto the tube where the battery is in. If you have a rebuildable tank atomizer, open the tank and fill it up. If not, open the cap and drip your e-liquid onto the cotton or wicks. Whichever atomizer you use, let it soak onto the coil for about 30 seconds before you fire away. Use the button located on the tube or box mod and vape away.
Vapes in general are not something to be scared of for the most part. They operate like any other electronical unit like your cellular phone or remote control. The batteries that go into these are lithium ion batteries. The size of them differ greatly. While they start at 650mAh for regular starter kits, they are generally 18650 2200mAh batteries in mods. Lithium ions can sometimes be dangerous if they’re are not treated properly. Due to a quick change in rising temperature, lithium-ion batteries can cause thermal runaway. Various things can trigger it like overcharging, using your vape pen too quick without letting it cool down which causes overheating, or a punctured battery. This mixed with really hot coils can be an accident waiting to happen unless the right precautions are used. For these reasons, it is better to stick with regulated mods until you get the hang of things. Another good idea to keep your losses short would be to make sure you use high-quality batteries. The sleeve battery tube also should be well ventilated so the heat does not keep increasing inside.
3 Best Mech Mods
If you want an unregulated mechanical mod then this is a great one. It is at a great price, durable and really compact. As we mentioned before, unregulated vaporizers don’t prevent shorts or overheating so you must be careful and definitely not a beginner. The Kamry K100 mech mod is telescopic vape which means you can make it longer or shorter which will be determined by the type of battery you use. Batteries are either 18650 or 18350 ICR battery. It has a spinning dial at the bottom that either locks the power button or unlocks it and lets you push it to fire it up. You can unscrew the stock atomizer off and put your own since it’s a 510 thread connection. The atomizer it comes with is a small metal tube with cotton inside of it so you can drip your liquids on it. The Kamry K100 comes with a specific charger for the batteries it comes with. Just place it in the charger and let it charge for a few hours. This vape pen mod is very sturdy and reliable mainly because of its design but because of its unregulated feature. Unregulated mods are vapes that do not contain a circuit board. This means nothing can get messed up inside the device except for the battery connections. This is why we have a 1 year warranty on these because we stand behind the device.
One of the higher up and bang for your buck mod vapes in this space is the Eleaf Istick 50W Mod Vaporizer because of its wide range of features.
